Michelle’s best advice
- It is important to get puppies used to grooming on a regular basis to help keep it a positive experience. Don’t forget they will need to be groomed their entire life!
- Grooming should always be a positive experience.
- Grooming helps rid them of their shedding coat and allows you to view their body up close in order to detect any changes like; lumps, bumps, or even parasites.
- Dogs should have their nails clipped on monthly bases to avoid future health problems such a joint pain and pour disposition

- Dogs should also have their ears cleaned and plucked (if needed) on monthly bases also.
- Many dogs will try to resist when getting groomed. This is where we need to teach them that sometimes they can’t have it their way; they will get a bath, and they will get their nails trimmed. Once they understand that you WILL follow through, most dogs will settle and comply
- Grooming for small dogs (Shihtzu, Bichons, Schnauzers, Westies, Poodles etc.) usually requires full grooms at least every 6-8 weeks.
- Larger dogs (Border collies, Labs, Golden Retriever etc.) should be groomed at least every 8-12 weeks especially if your dog enjoys swimming in the river during the warmer months.
- MYTH: that you should only bath your dog if it’s stinky or dirty and that by regular bathing you will be removing essential oils out of their coats, resulting in dried coat. TRUTH: grooming supplies including shampoos and conditioners are made for dogs to clean their coats effectively without any risk. It is not necessary to bath you dog every day, but don’t be afraid of getting them groomed regularly.
- If you do decide to bath your dog at home, make sure your dog is FULLY BRUSHED OUT (meaning NO mats) before the tub. If the dog is not brushed out, the mats and tangles in his/her fur will tighten up making brushability extremely difficult usually resulting in shaving the dog right down. This can also be painful for the dog if the fur is being pulled too tight.
- Grooming your dog is necessary! It helps keep them healthy.
